I am running for Mayor because I strongly believe that one person can make a difference in our community with the right attitude and approach. I will work hard to restore a sense of community and neighborhood pride to Upper Darby by providing opportunities for residents to participate in recreational and social activities currently lacking in the township. I am committed to revitalizing our neighborhood business districts and providing the right direction for 69th Street to succeed after 40 years of failed attempts to make this a vital part of our town.

If I am elected Mayor, I will see that the budget is trimmed to eliminate wasteful spending, such as over-priced contract bids and patronage jobs. We can work to increase services to the community this way without raising our already too-high taxes. I will push to have council meetings televised on our free local access cable channel and to provide other vital community information to keep our residents informed and our government transparent and accountable. I am a fair and unbiased candidate who will work with everyone in our current government to achieve the best results for the people of Upper Darby.

I believe that the residents of Upper Darby deserve to feel safe and be protected from crime while shopping, dining and walking through our neighborhoods. Increasing police presence is necessary in some areas, while encouraging residents to participate in programs already offered, such as neighborhood watch groups, is another way to take back ownership of our streets. We have to make Upper Darby Township a place that families want to move into, stay, and raise their families.

Keeping our green spaces clean and accessible is another priority. With over 82,000 residents, we already have a shortage of open space. I will oppose any further development in any open areas, such as what has happened in the Drexel Hill section known as the Whalen tract. Our parks are our best resource for recreation and should be properly maintained. I am also researching ways in which the township can save energy while becoming more cost-efficient.

If you are interested in a new voice for a new direction, please volunteer to help with my campaign and please contribute to the effort. It is only with the will of the people that change can succeed.

Sincerely,
Janice Oakey
